| Everyone loses scalp hair. At birth, the average head is covered with about 100, 000 follicles - pouch-like sacs which produce individual hairs. Though the number never changes, the activity of each follicle varies as we become older. Undue loss of hair is called alopecia. Heredity, a disease or even drug therapy can lead to baldness. The most frequently observed type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia. It is responsible for about 95% of the cases of hair loss in the USA. Males are at higher risk of developing androgenetic alopecia. Two factors impact on hair growth: a genetic predisposition to undue hair loss and the male hormone TESTOSTERONE. Normally, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which stimulates the growth of hair, but also shrinks hair follicles on the scalp, resulting in thinner, fuzzier growth. A genetic predisposition, along with raised levels of testosterone and DHT, increases the likelihood that scalp hair growth may be adversely impacted. Baldness is observed when the rate of shed hair is bigger than the number of re-growth or when the re-growth is finer and/or shorter than the hair that is shed. Androgenetic alopecia is not a medical disorder; it is more a cosmetic defect. One of the most effective treatment therapies sanctioned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is Finasteride (Propecia). Taken daily in a tablet form, Propecia slows down the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thereby helping to prevent the shrinking of hair follicles. The drug therapy is for men ONLY and must not be taken by women, since it can result in birth deformities. Generic Propecia, which is as efficacious as the branded version, is low-priced and, therefore, can be bought by a larger number of males suffering from alopecia. As a result of a two-year study 83% of men aged 18 - 41 with mild to moderate have maintained their hair. Most males reported an increase in the amount of hair, a decrease in hair loss, and improvement in appearance. Generic Propecia may result in side effects. In clinical studies, side effects from Generic Propecia were rare and did not impact most men. A very small number of men reported certain sexual adverse side effects. These side effects were temporary and disappeared in males who stopped taking Generic Propecia. These adverse side effects also went away in most men (58%) who continued taking Generic Propecia.
